Career Advice from Inspirational Women

Crafted from 9k gold and set with glimmering white topaz, the pieces in our new MIM Precious collection were designed as personal keepsakes, which all women could gift themselves—to wear every day and cherish forever— as a symbol of strength and independence.

To celebrate the launch of the collection, we chatted to three inspiring women who are fostering not only their own creativity and ambitions, but also other women’s—women close to them and all across the globe. Liz Sunshine captured the women in Melbourne, wearing pieces from the collection.

EMMA ISAACS — BUSINESS CHICKS

Emma Isaacs is the founder and Global CEO of Business Chicks—Australia’s largest community for women—and is passionate about encouraging women to be bold, to be courageous and to take risks.

Tell us a little about your career: where did you start and how did you get to where you are now.

I’ve had an interesting career in that I’ve never really worked for anyone other than myself. I got my start as an entrepreneur when I was 18 by joining a friend in a recruitment company as a director and shareholder. I was still working in the recruitment company when a friend invited me to attend a Business Chicks event and I loved it so much that I returned to their next event a few months later where I found out that the business was for sale. The engagement with the Business Chicks brand was off the scale. I saw thousands of switched on, successful women and knew I could really take it somewhere, so I bought it six months later and incorporated it as a company in 2006. Back then it was a tiny group, but we’ve grown it into the expansive network it is today, spanning two continents and eleven cities.

What is your advice to women who are just starting out in their career?

If you’ve got a dream or a goal, just take one small step at a time. Being successful is all about mindset and the quicker we can understand that, and work on improving our mindsets and changing the negative self-talk that grips so many of us, the more fulfilled life becomes.

What keeps you motivated?

I’m lucky that I’m a naturally motivated and determined person. I have had times when it’s been all about just stretching myself – proving to myself that I can set a goal and work hard to achieve it.

If I had to pick one thing though as to what drives me it’s to serve women – I think we live in an exciting time for women and the possibilities are endless. Through my work, I love playing a small part in that.

What’s next for Business Chicks and yourself?

It’s really just more of the same. We’re lucky that as a business we’re still in growth, and we’re always innovating and creating. I just want more people to experience Business Chicks and what we can do for them. I’ve also just released my first book (called Winging It) so I want to sell approximately ten thousand truckloads of that too please.

SHIRIN & DIBA — DOT DOT DASH

Meet Founder and Managing Director Shirin Pulitano and her sister General Manager Diba Beylie of Dot Dot Dash—a creative event management agency.

Tell us a little about your career: where did you start and how did you get to where you are now.

Shirin: I’d always been interested in design and creativity from an early school age. My early career was spent as an operations leader for a multinational catering company where there were many growth opportunities but not much creativity involved. After contracting for a few businesses in brand management and events, I finally took the plunge and started Dot Dot Dash so I could focus my energy on designing and executing beautiful events.

Diba: My journey was pretty organic. I started out in retail working with local designers and businesses, and found myself heavily encouraging Shirin to go out on her own and being invited along for the ride! What a ride it’s been. Over the past 10 years we have built a business out of establishing and maintaining strong relationships and have become respected specialists in event design and activations.

What is your advice to women who are just starting out in their career?

Diba: Take the time to get to know your client and the project, and build an honest partnership with them. Also fighting fires is half the job so don’t get disheartened if something doesn’t go to plan - you can always find a solution and there are always people willing to help you.

Who are the women that inspire your life and work?

Shirin: My mum - because she is so generous with her time, love, and everything really. Every woman who works hard to prove that she is just as deserving as her male counterpart while trying to give as much of herself as she can to her loved ones and be the best she can be outside of work.

Diba: I’ve always been very inspired by the women in my family - my mum, my sisters, my aunts, but it's hard for me to single people out. There are women all around the world experiencing, surviving and overcoming so many different challenges every day, over the past twelve months their stories have been getting more attention and I am more and more inspired by these brave voices every day.

What keeps you both motivated?

Shirin: My three babies Matilda, Oscar & Dot Dot Dash. And coffee.

Diba: I will never tire of seeing our ideas jump off the page into reality but I’m even more motivated by the people who help us shape, and make them - our team. Beyond being some of the most talented and hardworking people in the biz, they look after each other and they really care about their work. They are also hilarious and make me laugh every day - it makes it easy to show up!

What's next, for Dot Dot Dash and yourselves?

Shirin: We’re expecting to grow our team and our business as we approach our 10th birthday next year. It will be a crazy time but as they say, if you want something done, ask the busiest woman you know!
