THE COCOON BAG

Introduced in 2006, coveted to this day — it’s safe to say our cult-favourite Cocoon Bag has some serious sartorial staying power. In celebration of our 30th birthday, we’ve reinterpreted the relaxed, slouchy shape, drawstring opening and distinctive hardware that perfectly captured the spirit of mid-2000s street style in contemporary-feeling fabrications and finishes — a fresh lens on a timeless, oh-so Mimco style.

Originally introduced in 2006, the Cocoon Bag quickly became a cult favourite. Its relaxed, slouchy shape, drawstring opening and distinctive hardware perfectly captured the spirit of mid-2000s Australian street style, and it soon became a must-have for Mimco customers and retail staff alike. The design itself was instantly recognisable — a softly structured, circular-base bag with a balloon-like silhouette, relaxed drawstring top and large oval metal eyelets.

It had that effortless quality that made it feel equally at home dressed up or worn casually, while its generous shape gave it a practical, everyday appeal. The relaxed proportions, distinctive shape, dual-strap functionality and practical zip pouch made it distinctive without being overly complicated. Together, these details created a silhouette that was instantly recognisable as Mimco, and a style that customers continued to return to year after year.

Its popularity extended well beyond Mimco stores, with the bag becoming a familiar fixture across Australian boutiques and a memorable part of Australian fashion culture at large.

The Cocoon has also had an impressive life beyond its original launch. Over the years, we’ve reinterpreted the silhouette in different leathers, colours, finishes and proportions — from classic black, honey and fuchsia through to more playful iterations such as the Furry Cocoon and Mini Sequin versions. Now, in 2026, we’re launching a larger-size limited edition Cocoon, available in our 30th birthday Re-Edition capsule.

Despite these transformations, the distinctive character of the original has remained.

In 2021, as we celebrated our 25th anniversary, we looked back through our archives to celebrate five defining designs. The resulting Icons Collection named each bag after the year it was born, formally recognising the Cocoon 2006 as one of Mimco’s key design milestones.

What makes the Cocoon particularly interesting is the way it continues to feel relevant. Rather than simply reproducing the original, its archive revivals have allowed the design to evolve with the times.

There is something quite special about a design that can be introduced in 2006, become a cult favourite, return through multiple generations and still feel relevant today.

The Cocoon is more than an archive style — it is a piece of Mimco’s design DNA and a genuine Australian fashion icon.
