THE BUTTON BAG

Buckle up. Or, button up. One of our most well-known (and loved) archival styles is back. From its 2005 runaway success to its recent resurgence as a grail item among TikTok’s second hand savants — Mimco’s re-invention of the classic doctor’s bag with big, bold buttons remains iconic, three decades strong.

Well before it was discovered by a new generation and elevated to unicorn status among Gen Z secondhand resellers, the Button Bag has long been an emblem of our brand — a bold reinvention of an everyday essential with a unique, expressive twist.

First launched in 2005, the Button served as an antidote to the sense of sameness that characterised much of the early aughts fashion landscape. We took the classic doctor’s bag shape and reimagined it with a big, bold detail: the button. The first design featured contrast piping and large side pockets adorned with, of course, the unique oversized button.

Roomy enough to carry your life around in with that attention grabbing touch – this perfect blend of practicality and panache has lent itself to reinvention season after season in myriad fabrications and finishes. Now, in 2026, our faithful Re-Edition Button arrives in softly grained leather designed to develop a beautiful character over time — made to be loved for decades to come, just like its iconic predecessors.

Hunting through vintage markets looking for inspiration has always played a big part in the Mimco creative process. It’s been a part of our DNA from the brand’s inception, and still is today. And the iconic Button Bag’s story illustrates this perfectly.

Often finding creative inspiration through travel, founder Amanda Briskin-Rettig visited Paris frequently in the early days of Mimco. You might assume that vintage fashion stores would’ve been her first port of call, but that wasn’t her style. Rather, she would visit places such as the Clignancourt Market, one of the most popular and famous flea markets in Paris, spending a lot of time in the furniture and antiques section, gleaning design inspiration from unconventional items. On one trip, she also came across an exquisitely merchandised haberdashery store, where major inspiration struck. Working her way through the boutique, something caught her eye — a massive, round, blue plastic button.

That Parisian button became the foundation for what would become the Button Bag. At first, all the buttons that went onto the first-generation Button Bags were bought, but over time as the bag became more popular, we created our own button moulds so we could produce buttons in different colours and special finishes for new evolutions of the bag. The essence of good design is ultimately a new idea and application – and nothing demonstrates this better than the Button Bag.
