To mark our fifth year of partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, we are proud to have co-commissioned a piece of artwork produced by Alice for the exhibition—a set of bioplastic PPE face shields made from food waste and dyed using flowers she collected in London’s parks during the COVID–19 lockdown titled, ‘Dance Biodegradable Personal Protective Equipment (DBPPE) post COVID facemasks 2020’.

Alice’s work seeks to highlight the acceleration of single-use plastic for COVID-19-related PPE and emphasise the need for a shift to sustainable alternatives.

We have also collaborated with Alice on a limited-edition capsule jewellery collection crafted using upcycled materials from our archive and sustainably produced sequins created by Alice from biomaterials.

The bioplastic sequins created by Alice for the collection look and feel like plastic, but are actually crafted entirely from discarded food and plant waste. These sequins were then paired with semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls and other rich beads from the MIMCO archive—resulting in 20 truly unique, one-off jewellery pieces.

“When the NGV were putting together the Triennial, they came to us and showed us the artists they were looking to work with, and Alice stood out immediately.”

“Collaborations with the NGV and prominent artists like Alice are important because they give us an opportunity to explore materials we otherwise wouldn’t have, and force us to look at sustainable materials for the future.”

“The collaboration with MIMCO is an extension of the PPE I developed for the Triennial. The most amazing part was that they gave me time and a platform to really push the bioplastics into a product and work in a collaborative way with MIMCO’s jewellery designer, Sophie, to make these limited-edition pieces.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learnt throughout this whole process, it’s that there is an opportunity for sustainable art in fashion’s future.”
