How would you sum up what you do?
I write pop music for me and sometimes for other people.
You're from Australia but have lived all over the world. What's made you settle in LA and how often do you get a chance to “come home”?
Definitely the burritos. Also, there's this light thing that happens in the sky just before sunset everyday that is pretty remarkable.
What's on rotation for you at the moment?
Pretty much every song on the new War on Drugs record is incredible and I'm into "Habits" by Tove Lo right now. To be honest, the radio in LA is pretty fantastic...
You're a singer/musician. Tell us about your music, who you have played with, where you have performed and where we can listen to/buy your music?
It's punky pop music - not to be confused with pop punk. Ha. Siouxsie and the Banshees x Gwen Stefani is generally the goal. Last year I was touring with this band Goldroom and performed all over the States and Internationally. You can find me on soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/mereki - and iTunes but none of my new stuff is out yet. SOON!
How much does music influence your life?
For me, it's more about life influencing my music. I write about whatever I see or hear or think or feel so it doesn't get trapped or lost in my brain or heart. I have a TERRIBLE memory too, so it's sort of like a sonic scrapbook. Music and writing is definitely a cathartic process for me, so in that sense it positively influences my life a lot.
What's one line/lyric from a song that has stayed with you and why?I know I should be responding with something a little deeper, but I'm gonna go for, "Now she's in purple, now she's a turtle" because... what a line!
What's the best place to eat in LA?
Forage in Silverlake or TACO ZONE in front of the Vons on Alvarado.
If someone only had 24 hours in LA what would you suggest they do/see/visit?
Blueberry pancakes at Little Dom's, Planetarium show at Griffith Park Observatory, Echo Park Lake for a quick jaunt to gather your zen, then burritos at Taco Zone, drink at this weird French bar/ restaurant called Taix that I love, and then, I guess, dancing at Dirty Laundry and a nightcap at No Vacancy. Phew, you're tired, go to bed.
What did you think of Switch Lanes by Tkay Maidza?
Love it. Love her.
What's next for you?
I just finished my EP, produced by Justin Raisen (Charli xcx, Sky Ferreira). So, I'm waiting for that to come out, organizing a bunch more live shows in LA, and releasing some new music videos...
